You’re definitely not going to hear this from Piers Morgan (not that you want to hear anything from Piers Morgan) but according the Washington Times, “Chicago police are reporting that the murder rate for the first quarter of the year is the lowest it’s been in more than 50 years, which gun advocates are attributing to a concealed carry law passed in Illinois last year. The first three months of 2014 have seen the fewest number of homicides since 1958 — six fewer than this time in 2013, and 55 fewer than this time in 2012, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.”
Now you might think Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Mr. Never Let a Good Crisis Go to Waste, wouldn’t let good news like this go unreported – but no, it doesn’t fit the liberal progressive agenda. Or how about President Obama celebrating gun violence in his hometown being down? Nah, better to do a Rose Garden press conference to lie about the number of Obamacare sign ups.
Gun-rights advocates always say concealed carry laws can reduce crime and keep the population safer. The state of Illinois began accepting applications for permits in January. “The facts are every time guns have been allowed, concealed-carry has been allowed, the crime rate has gone down,” said Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, just months before Illinois passed the concealed carry law in July 2013.
However, there is another perspective on this positive turnaround. Chicago Police Superintendant Garry McCarthy says the opposite of more guns is what’s reducing crime: police have recovered 1,300 illegal guns during the first three months of 2014. Mr. McCarthy also attributed the drop in violence to better police training and community programs to keep kids off the street.
My assessment is it’s a combination of these positive factors. One thing is for certain: banning guns did not cause this situation to take an “about face.”
What puzzles me is that gun control acolytes, such as the insane body in Connecticut’s legislature, fail to understand that only law-abiding citizens will obey laws, including new gun laws. Those individuals who don’t are called “outlaws” for a reason, because they act outside the law. The guns that the Chicago Police Superintendent has confiscated are “illegal” guns.
Now that carry restrictions are eased in Chicago, you see the good guys doing what is right: applying, and registering for their carry permits. Those are the folks who will keep our streets safe because outlaws only go where they believe their behavior won’t be challenged.
In the aftermath of the second Ft. Hood mass shooting, there are many clamoring for all soldiers to carry concealed weapons on military installations. This is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction and it’s not the solution. The military doesn’t need Congress to step in and take control of the situation, it just needs courageous leaders who command our military installations to issue an order — which they can. The order is simple and should outline procedures by which subordinate commands — I recommend the Battalion level — are able to construct a duty roster arming key leaders at the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer and Junior Officer level in unit areas with a 9mm sidearm and two magazines.
This program should be placed under the direct guidance and supervision of the Battalion/Squadron level Command Sergeants Major or in case of Air Force and Navy, Command Master Sergeants and Master Chief Petty Officers.
It is time adults started developing commonsense solutions to combat gun crime in the United States. We don’t need more hair-on-fire liberal progressive ideologues trying to create rules, which are the antithesis of our Second Amendment right.
Sad to think that this story from the Washington Times isn’t receiving wider dissemination. It’s a good news story, but then again, it’s counter to the agenda of the progressive socialists and their media accomplices.
